My very own Nigerian scam attempt

You get five gold points for every red flag you find.

It starts with a simple posting on Craigslist. I won a Zune at work and would like to sell it.

Wednesday morning, I got a biter:

Jennygray80@gmail.com: Hello, Is this item still up for sale???.

Me: It is indeed. Would you like to pick it up in gunbarell today?
Eric
-------------

One minute later I received a blank reply. Kind of odd.

Then, 32 minutes later, a real reply. I'll precede the rest of this correspondence with [sic], so I only have to write it once:

Jennygray80@gmail.com: Then a real reply: Thanks allot for the reply........actually i supposed to come and check the item out but im out of states right now so i wont be able to come over but i will pay $250 for the item and please note that am shipping the item to an overseas partner so i will include $150 shipping fee,i will arrange for the payment of the item via paypal,it is very secure and fast mode of making an online payment or transfer,to proceed with
the transaction asap send me your paypal email address so that i can proceed with the payment of the item.
Thank you very much hope to hear from you soon

Me: Where do you need me to ship the item exactly? I will ship the zune only when I see that you have posted sufficient funds in my PayPal account to cover the Zune and shippng.

My PayPal email address is ericsforsyth@gmail.com.
thanks,
eric

Jennygray80@gmail.com: Thanks for the mail,by the time i send $400 to your account i am sure it will be enough for you to ship the item via USPS EXPRESS MAIL INTL,here is the shipping info

Name:Adedipo Sola
Address;block 11,academy road
City:Ibadan
State:Oyo state
Country:Nigeria

i will email you once i have sent payment.
---------

Within 45 minutes I received the following email from "PayPal." Click on the screen shot to read it.

Sure enough, "Jenny" was right on the ball, back in my inbox within minutes:

Jennygray80@gmail.com: Hello
I just wish to notify you that i have sent payment from my PayPal account
(mounlade@hotmail.com) into your PayPal account (ericsforsyth@gmail.com) i also included shipping cost so that you will be able to ship to the address given below ...check your email under paypal.Hope you have gotten notification from PayPal regarding the payment and i want to believe that i have done everything right for you to ship out the item ASAP because as am talking to
you now the payment has been deducted from my account ,so i will be waiting
for the USPS EXPRESS MAIL INTL shipments tracking number, Here is the
shipping information you need.

Name:Adedipo Sola
Address;block 11,academy road
City:Ibadan
State:Oyo state
Country:Nigeria
23402

PLS SEND IT VIA USPS EXPRESS MAIL ONLY

THANKS.

Me: Hi "Jenny."

I will not consider sending "the item" (as you continually refer to it) until I see the funds posted to my PayPal account. You don't need to send $400 (as you originally offered), let alone $500 (as your supposedly real PayPal email claims.) I just need $150 + shipping, in confirmed funds.

Oh, and I need it to be real. I logged into my PayPal account to see if the $500 had been posted - or if it was even there as PENDING confirmed shipment of "the item". It was not. I am very familar with how PayPal works. And it does not work that way.

This is an obvious fraud. I will still sell you the zune in exchange for ACTUAL PAYMENT. If I receive actual payment in my US PayPal account, I will not report all the details of your scheme to the FTC and the PayPal International Fraud Prevention team - as no fraud will have taken place. Only attempted fraud.

Not even a very good attempt, although I'm sure you dupe countless victims every day, which is why PayPal would be very interested in seeing the details of your scheme.

If actual payment is not posted in my PayPal account by 2pm mountain time, I will take this entire chain and the fake paypal.co.uk email to the proper authorities.

You have a choice. Good luck.
-------------

Needless to say, I didn't hear back.

CHECK THE E-MAIL FROM ADDRESS PAYPAL!!!!!!!!
Paypal sends info from "Service@paypal.com" (service@paypal.com) the scammers are using "Service@paypal.com" (verification.intl@consultant.com)

so UNLESS THE TWO MATCH IT IS A FAKE!!!!!!!
(with both of them being from paypal of course)

here are some e-mail addresses of fakes that have tried to use the before mentioned scam

roselaspo002@gmail.com
errikjames@gmail.com
rossdiceare@aol.com
beck55@live.com

send any phishing e-mail that you are unsure about to spoof@paypal.com and they will get back to you usually the same day and tell you if it is fake or not

I got an email from Rose Johnson regarding a house that I am planning to rent. Offered to pay me 4 months rent in advance plus damage deposit. How would this person have been able to rip me off? Or would they have insisted on a money order? I wouldn't have sent anything to them. Maybe they would have pulled out and asked for their money back?

I had an attempt made one me when I posted a 0-360 optic on craigslist in Vancouver Canada. I was contacted by a Mr. "Johnson Richard" (johnsonrichard718@gmail.com) who wanted to get it for his son, who studies in Africa, for his birthday present. He was, however, "out of town on a business trip in Australia" but wanted to pay by paypal or bank transfer so that it could be shipped Express Mail immediately.
So stay away from Mr. Johnson Richard too. Is it just me or all these scammers have poor english and grammar?

Same thing...Rosapoo or whatever...luckily I didn't fall for that one. But these people are getting better..I had a JVC Home theatre system for auction of Ebay...I got something from ebay saying that a Karen Bach from Idaho was the winning bidder $405..then I received a thing from Paypal saying that they were holding payment til I sent the shipping verification.. it looked real to me. Anyways..Karen contacted me again by email & asked for it to be shipped to her cousin in New York, Richard something..so I complied...anyways about $350 later..(shipping charges) I shipped it UPS..Next Day..luckily only 30 minutes after it was shipped I checked Paypal & called them & they said that there wasn't any payment there for me..I checked Ebay & that lady was no longer a member they said.. I freaked out because this thing was already on it's way to New York. So I did my research, made several calls to Paypal & ebay (which were no help at all, ebay)and UPS & the Internet FBI..& the destination that it was going to in New York (Liberty Shipping) With the time difference UPS said that they weren't sure if the package could be intercepted because of the time difference (Im in California) & the JVC was already on a plane to New York. Anyways..I didn't find out until about 3 days later that yes, they did intercept it..and I guess the man that it was supposed to go to wouldn't accept it (that's only because I called the shipping company & told them) and it was finally returned to me 8 days later, including a turn-around shipping charge of $150...I've reported Ebay to the Better Business Bureau and other authorites as well. They need to be help somewhat responsible for this. The original email was a legit ebay email. Oh and I also looked up that Karen Bach in Idaho..she was a 65 year old women that didn't even shop on ebay... so her identity was stolen as well! This was all done by one idiot out there that actually had the nerve to email me the following day asking if I had any other items like cameras, electronics & other things for sale..but I basically ripped him/her a new one and I haven't heard from them since. The emails were given to the Internet Detectives & other authorities. The other scary thing is that when I clicked on my user id from the fake emails it went straight to another person like I was writing him or something!! I don't know how they linked this...but I don't trust anyone online anymore. Oh ya, as Rosepoo whatever told me when I refused to sell her my laptop... "Be warned"!

Glad to see all these responses. Keep spreading the competency.

I was selling an old IBM laptop I know longer needed. I got an email from Rose Johnson saying she would by it but couldn't do a local pick up. Being from a small town in NH, I understood, but I was still hesitant. The next email I received was from "paypal" with an amount way over what I was asking for. It also had shipping information for:
Bashiru Ismaheel
30,IJEUN STREET,ITOKU,
ABEOKUTA,OGUN STATE.
NIGERIA.234-039

I was torn, because I needed the money, and the paypal looked legit. It said the money was pending until shipping information was received. I logged into my paypal to see nothing. That's when I got really suspicious (that along with the Nigeria thing) and googled the email address to find this site! I knew I was right. I emailed her with the link to this site and got a response saying I was trying to scam her...the nerve! And I was also told that I should send it "If you dont want me to take a legal action against you as an UN diplomaticofficer." She proceeds to sign "Be warned..."
The rudeness!

Thanks for this site!

I posted my Macbook Aluminum on craigslist for $1300 and this is what I got from her...

" Thanks for the mail...i was introduced to this site by a friend at work and i will like immediate purchase of this item for my Brother who is away out of the state to study in overseas and been requesting for this item...i will offer you $1500.00 including the shipping charges to him.. there because he is in need of it as a matter of urgency and due to my work i don't have time to handle the shipping..i will want you to help me handle the shipping very well to him..Get back to me with your confirmed PayPal email address so that i can send the payment..... Get back to me asap..."

Then, I sent her my Paypal email and then I received this:

"ok i will make the payment now and get back to you with the shipping address thanks i trust in you........"

Finally, I sent her an offer she couldn't refuse ; )

Thanks to whoever made this blog!

I just emailed him today and told him I cant, but he sent back an email.(roastedapples@yahoo.com) saying that he was working in texas and pls pls sent the ring to nigeria. yeah right. for anyone out there using paypal, at least for ebay transactions.. all funds are held in paypal till the item is recieved. and I can see the funds in my paypal account, and print shipping lables also. to see a paypal notice that says funds are held till shipped is a big red flag. Darn it, now I have a beautiful white gold diamond wedding ring that i have to relist on ebay.

Still happening and I totally just got taken. "Angelina Cole" (colea01@gmail.com) is working in Haiti - the nerve!!! - and wanted a laptop for her daughter studying in Nigeria. Stupid me didn't do my due diligence and saw a "pending" payment in my PayPal and assumed (duh!) that it was all good.

Here's the address:

Un-freaking-believable. And yes, when I read "Angelina" the riot act, she tried to flip the blame. I'm so mad I could spit nails. How have these people not gotten caught?!?

Who do I report this to?

Jenn, report it to your friends. Spread the word in an effort to abolish ignorance and raise awareness. We just have to be more tech / scam savvy.

Bottom line, if you don't know the person personally, they aren't local, and the payment offered seems too good to be true, it's a scam 100% of the time.

I am from west africa and i spent over 6 years in Benin Republic, over 10 years in Togo, over 6 years in Ghana. And I know about this dudes. I used to be a manager of a cyber cafe on the campus of Legon University (Ghana), The name of the cafe internet was VOLTA CAFE.

I know about this dudes. I will spend hours and hours on the internet trying to scam people. A guy will be chatting will a dude in the USA and he will present himself as a woman. And in case he receives a call from one of his "Lovers" he will pass the phone to a girl next to him for her to entertain the USA man.

Sometimes you will see them paying items online from fake credit cards or stolen credit cards.

They make me sick.

The very same happened to me today. I had posted this morning a post on kijiji about selling my brown suede high heels for 60$ and i got a text not long after from a person, number is 1-646-543- 5214, saying brown suede high heels size 7.5 60.00$ ...is this item still available for sale?. I was all happy that someone contacted me so fast. so i replied yes they were still available at the moment. And then she/he went on about wanting to offer the ``item`` for her co-worker at work who was transferred to western africa for her birthday that was on the 24sept. the person told me she will offer me an additional payment of 150$ for the shipping using paypal. she/he gave me her/his paypal email(which is wilsontari23@gmail.com)she then said shed offer me 210$ in total and that she want me to ship it via canada post air mail international. she said it would only cost me 125$ to ship it. i thought it was weird but i just thought on the moment that it was my lucky day(especially that it is my birthday lol)i gave her my email(which i use for paypal also). Then i started thinking that 210$-125$=85$ which was weird because i only sold my high heels for 60$. she/he sent me a message from another number (1-770-696- 6153)saying tat she had sent the money, to just check my paypal email adress inbox for a confimation. as soon as i got home i went on paypal to check if i had gotten nothing and at my sorta suprise i saw there was nothing. Then i went on my email and saw i had gotten 4emails from``paypal`` which was service@paypal.com saying that i had received a payment from Wilson Tari(wilsontari23@gmail.com) of 210.50$ and then it said : Thanks for using PayPal you can now send the item. It may take a few minutes for this transaction to appear in your account.

I wish I had done research a week ago this exact seller and address scammed me out of $85 for shoes not to mention 63 for shipping. I reported to the Internet Crime Site now I need to find these people I want my money back.

This is happening to me as we speak, I responed to a add and the next thing I know a beautiful lady is messaging me want me to marry her, I knew this was bullshit right away, she said she needed $400 to check out of a hotel, I humored her and asked for the address, when she gave me the address I immediately googled it and been reading all these interesting scam stories, I don't know what to do about this, I think I'm going to play along and find out more.......

They are still at it. Have been in contact with a katenorrey@gmail.com over the last few days about an engagement ring posted on gumtree. She messeged asking if it was still for sale and how much. She then offered to pay £100 pounds over the amount for shipping costs and gave this name and address;

Blessing Olanrewaju
No. 10b Adatan Road
Abeokuta
Ogun State
Nigeria
zip: 234039

After using google to find the address to go see if its legit this forum came up. Glad i used my instinct and thanks for this forum hope it saves many others from making a big mistake.

I got a text today from 770-696-6153 asking if my item off kijiji was still for sale. After responding yes they said tey would pay $50CDN over asking price via paypal for shipping to Africa. Once I started asking questions they said they were at a conference in New York and that is why they needed me to ship. Googled the number and this came up.

I was also almost scammed by Wilson Tari. This is how it happen. I posted an add on Craigs List to sell my wedding dress and I got a message from cel number : 646-5435214, asking me if I still have the dress , and I responded yes I do , do you want to come over and try it ? and I diodn't here from she/he or who ever is doing the scam for an hour. Then She said: ?It is a gift for my best friend. Then I said it is ok to call me and she didn't respond, then she said I will pay 200$ for the shipping and then I said what if the dress doesn't fit her? and she replied: is a gift , she can always sale it if she doesn't want it. Then I said OK. and she ask me for my paypal mail, and I create one account and give to her. I ask her do you want to see some real pics of the dress (because what I posted on Craigs list was only the catalog pic. and she said: it will be lovely. THen I took some time and she said : If it is not possible to see the pics is ok. and I said , no I will send it to you just give me some time. and provide the address of :
Renato Lizardo
Nigeria
5Karounwi Street Lagos State City Ijeshatedo zip code 23401
and I receive a mail from paypal indicating that that I receive a payment of 650 that is pending and will be posted to my account in few minutes. I enter to my paypal and didn'ts show any activity , nothing pending. Then the buyer/scammer Tori Wilson will text me several times to see if I shipped. and ask me to keep her post it. I was ready to ship and I just feel that this was fishi and google, thanks for teh details on this page I just tell her I decided to sell in cash and in person.Shi is harrasing me by texting me messages. I am just ignoring them.

Hi there

I graduated last year so I decided to sell my dress through kijiji for 150$, yesterday morning I received a text number 770-696 6153 this is what it said.

Person: Beautiful Strapless High low prom Gown is this item still available for sale?

me: Hi there it is still available.

person: I am willing to purchase this item as a N.Y gift for my friend in Africa and I will offer $200 for shipping through PayPal. Thanks

Person: Do you have a PayPal account?

me: I do

all I need is your PayPal email address so that I can make the payment now ok

me: may I have your email address so I can send an invoice

person: wilsontari23@gmail.com

Then I received another text from another number 832-301-9013

person: 1/2 here is the shipping address below...

Name: Renato Lizardo
Country: Nigeria
5Karouwi Street
Lagos state
City: Ijeshatedo
zip: 23401

person:I just sent out the payment you may check your PayPal email address inbox or spam for the receipt confirmation from PayPal.

Before checking my email I went on my PayPal account and the balance was $0.00 then I checked
my email but nothing was on the normal inbox I received 4 emails in my junk mail which was weird because PayPal emails never go through junk mails So I checked and it confirmed the payment witch was $300 so I called PayPal they asked me for the email and I gave them the email witch was service@intl.paypal
the real email is : service@intl.paypal.com
so it was a scam it's a good thing I was smart enough to call and make sure everything was safe and I don't trust anyone in the internet anymore.

don't be fooled people

The answer followed my email with a suspicion tone: /what do you think?/

"look here.. i want you to know that the payment has already been

has automatically belongs to you and will be released and credited

ok..

However, i do assured 100% maximum guarantee that your money will be
credited into your account once my bank received the shipment details
from you and within 24hours your money will arrived and reflect into
your account for you to cashed ok..

So,i will henceforth urge you to kindly bear with my bank procedure so
that we can both have a successful transaction and kindly ship out the
item directly now and then contact my bank with the shipment scan
receipt and your money will be credited into your account instantly
without any delay ok..

Hope you understand me and i do not want any further argument because
the transfer of the payment will be completed into your account within
1hours once my bank received the shipment scan receipt from you..

Awaiting for the shipment scan receipt now ....

Best regards and have a nice day.."

@Johnny - it's a scam. Anytime they refer to your product as "the item" and not what it actually it, and any time they ask you to trust them, they are trying to scam you.

Unknown said...

These scammers are hilarious ( not if they actually manage to scam someone of course)but the fake paypal spam emails, the offering way over the price, and pretending to be in Wales visiting a sick grandma but wanting to pay £100 extra for me to post to his son in Nigeria, and his not so Nigerian name of Robert Chris Hamilto 😂. Shocking. Even more shocking this many years later they are still doing it!!

Should I go for it?
Can they scam me if I only reveal my bank account number and name to them?
